Named for I.F. Lewis, an American phycologist.

Distributional notes
This species has been introduced into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 93) being first found in Corsica prior to 1988. According to these authors the species is "invasive: contributed to the formation of extensive pluri-specific filamentous aggregates." Habitat notes
On Posidonia leaves at depths of 20 m and 30 m; epiphytic on Cystoseira (25 m and 9 m depth) and on Halopteris sp (20 m depth) (Hoffmann et al. 2000). - (1 Nov 2011) - Wendy Guiry
