Taxonomic notes
Chodat (1900: 10) wrote: "La dernière forme intéressante de cet étang remarquable par le grand nombre de ses Protococcoïdées est une espèce décrite par M. Lemmermann pour l'étang littoral déjà cité plus haut. C'est le Lyngbya contorta Lemm. J'ai tout lieu de croire que la singulière Ulothriciacée spiralée de l'étang deHofmansgave est identique à la plante prise par cet auteur pour un Lyngbya. Chez notre plante, avec une bonne immersion, on peut voir très nettement le chromatophore. Il n'y a pas de gaine et les cellules sont faiblement adhérentes en chaînes spiralées. Comme les dimensions indiquées par Lemmermann concordent assez bien avec celles de notre plante, nous pensons qu'il y a beaucoup de probabilité pour que les deux soient identiques (fîg. 20). Quoiqu'il en soit la nouvelle espèce appartient au genre Gloeotila Borzi et constitue une espèce nouvelle le G. contorta Chod. nov. spec. (Lyngbya contorta Lemmermann). [The last interesting form of this remarkable lake by many of its Protococcoïdées is a species described by M. Lemmermann for the pond shore cited above. This is the Lyngbya contorta Lemm. I have every reason to believe that the singular spiral of Ulothriciacée of Hofmansgave pond is identical to the plant taken by the author for a Lyngbya. In our plant , with a good immersion , it can be seen clearly the chromophore. There is no sheath and cells are weakly bonded in spiral chains. As the dimensions indicated by Lemmermann good agreement with those of our plant, we believe there is much probability that the two are identical (Fig. 20).
