Type locality: Atlantic Ocean; Spitsbergen; Sweden (Silva 1996-to date). Neotype: Fixed material of the culture "Laeso 5" has been deposited at the Botanical Museum, University of Copenhagen as number A2380. (epitype) S (Lundholm et al 2006: 467). Notes: Neotype: Slide labeled "Nitzschia delicatissima, Helder 7/5-97" in P.T. Cleve's handwriting in the Swedish Museum of Natural History (S), section of Botany. ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2 of the nuclear-encoded rDNA of the epitype have been sequenced and deposited at GenBank with accesssion number AY257849.
