This species, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, after its description (Falkenberg, 1901: 656) based on a single sterile specimen collected by Berthold in 1881 in the Gulf of Naples (Italy) between 10 and 20 m depth, was reported only 3 times

2) by Ballesteros (1984: 62) who described the tettrasporiferous specimens collected at Tossa de Mar (Catalan coast, Spain) at a depth of 18 m in a community with Ericaria zosteroides (C. Agardh) Molinari et Guiry (as Cystoseira zosteroides C. Agardh);
3) by Klein & Verlaque (2011: 119, figs 18-19) who described and illustrated the sterile thalli collected in Marseille (France) at a depth of 17 m on dead Posidonia oceanica rhizomes and at 29 m depth on a detrital bottom.
