Distributional note
"Chara galioides is known from many places in Europe and North Africa. Feld-mann (1946) as well as Guerlesquin (1974) and Muller et al. (2017) indicate a distribution in Northern Africa between Egypt and Morocco. In Europe this species is mainly present in brackish wetlands along the occidental and oriental Mediterranean mainland coasts (France: Mouronval et al., 2015 - Italy: Corillion and Guerlesquin, 1963 - Spain: Comelles, 1984, Ortega et al., 2004, Cirujano et al., 2008 - Greece: Raabe and Koumpli-Sovantzi, 2000, 2002 - Albania: Zeneli and Kashta, 2016) and islands (Becker, 2019; Bergmeier and Abrahamczyk, 2008; Corillion, 1952; Langangen, 2004; Martínez-Taberner and Moyà, 1993, Romanov et al., 2019). It is also identified on the Atlantic coast (Beaubert et al., 2015; Corillion, 1957b, 1975, Lafon and Lambert, 2020) and found along the Sea of Azov (Black Sea) (Borisova, 2016; Palamar-Mordvintseva, 1998). Former reports of occurrences in the Baltic Sea region turned out to be misidentifications (see Blümel and Raabe, 2004; Küster and Nielsen, 2003,Sinkeviciene, 2004)." (Lambert & Schubert 2024). - (10 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry

Conservational note
"In Sardinia, protection of Chara galioides is considered a highest priority (Becker, 2019), while in the Balkans the species is listed as Critically Endangered (CR), criterion B1 (Blazencic et al., 2006). Several suitable sites are endangered directly by human activities; from the Cyclades, Langangen (2004) reported about a brackish water locality of unique biological value where dumping of sewage must be stopped; Corillion (1952) labeled C. galioides as one of the 'rarest species of Charophyceae observable on the whole of the French territory'. Rodrigo and Alonso-Guillen (2016) highlighted that C. galioides is in low abundance and discontinuous in time, which also implies the need for protection measures." (Lambert & Schubert 2024). - (10 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
