Nomenclatural note
"This species was described from Marseille (France) by C. Agardh (1828: 181) and later illustrated by Kützing (1861: 23, pl. 70/I). De Toni (1903: 1265) listed it among the synonyms of Spermothamnion barbatum (C. Agardh) Bornet, a new combination proposed by Bornet (1892: 321), but by him erroneously credited to [(C. Agardh) Nägeli (1862: 353)] who instead had proposed the transfer of Ca. barbatum to the genus Herpothamnion Nägeli as Herpothamnion barbatum (C. Agardh) Nägeli (= Ptilothamnion pluma). Maggs & Hommersand (1993; 149 and 151), based on the study of the lectotype, concluded that the above C. Agardh%u2019s species is synonym of P. pluma. Differently, Athanasiadis (2016: 1022) treats Sp. barbatum as distinct species. We follow Maggs & Hommersand (op. cit.) and M.D. Guiry in Guiry & Guiry (2023) in considering it as a synonym of P. pluma." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 417). - (04 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
