Type Information
Type locality: "Mare anglicum" [English seas]; (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 223) Lectotype (designated by Newroth & Taylor 1971: 95, fig. 3): BM-SL; (Newroth & Taylor 1971: 95, fig 3) Notes: Newroth & Taylor (1991: 91) write "The name Fucus pseudoceranoides Gmelin (1768) appears to be the oldest that is legitimately attributable to the plant under discussion. No specimens of Phyllophora which can be associated with Gmelin have been found. Following his description Gmelin cited two phrase names: "Fucus parvus cauliculis teretibus, summitatibus membranaceis dilatatis et laceris, BU DDL. hort. sicc. V.I. fol. 27. RAY syn. p. 44. n. 19. HUD S. fl. anglo p. 466. n. 2. B. Fucus marinus ceranoides cornu cerui divisura, globulis verrucosis signatus, MORIS. hist. Ox 648 S. 8. n. 1 et Tourn. Inst. R. H. 568?" The second phrase name refers to mixtures of plants and to animals. It will be noted that Gmelin questioned this himself. However, the first phrase name takes us by means of each of the references cited to the same specimen in the BuddIe collection of the Sloane Herbarium in the British Museum. This specimen (Fig. 3) is to be found on page 27, volume 1, of the BuddIe collection. It is annotated: "Fucus parvus cauliculis ..... " as quoted in Gmelin (1768). This has been selected as the lectotype specimen of Phyllophora pseudoceranoides (Gmelin) comb. nov."

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cartilaginous, purplish or reddish-brown fronds, to 100 mm high, with narrow, cylindrical, irregularly dichotomously branched stipes arising from small discoid holdfasts and expanding into flat fan-shaped laminae.

Habitat
Shady sides of pools in lower intertidal and on rock subtidally. Widely distributed, frequent.

Similar Species
Phyllophora sicula, rasre on southern and western coasts occurs on rock in the extreme lower intertidal in Ireland and England; its fronds are less divided and arise in clusters from a thin, expanded, discoid base frequently buried in sand.
