The type species (lectotype) of the genus Saccharina is Saccharina plana Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kjellmaniella crassifolia Miyabe.

The name Saccharina crassifolia (Miyabe) C.E. Lane, C. Mayes, Druehl & G.W. Saunders was illegitimate due to the prior use of the binomial for a different taxon by Kuntze (1891).
