Taxonomic note
"In the Mediterranean Sea, two synonyms of Gayliella transversalis: Ceramium byssoideum Harvey nom. illeg. and C. gracillimum var. byssoideum, were recorded. However, considering that both were treated by Gómez Garreta et al. (2001) and Furnari et al. (2003) as synonyms of C. flaccidum (= Gayliella flaccida) and that records of the last species as well as of taxa thought as its synonyms are probably to be referred to as G. mazoyerae (see the note to G. flaccida), the occurrence of G. transversalis in the Mediterranean Sea requires confirmation. G. transversalis was recently recorded from Greece by Tsioli et al. (2021: 107, tab. 2), but such a record needs to be confirmed because it isn't documented." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 250). - (15 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
