The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Jania cultrata (Harvey) J.H.Kim, Guiry & H.-G.Choi.

Lectotype locality: Port Natal (Eurban), South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 227) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Johansen (1977: 175)
