The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidiella is Echinocaulon spinellum Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Parviphycus womersleyanus (Kraft & I.A.Abbott) Santelices.

Type locality: Kaiwi Point, ca. 1 km north of the harbor at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii I., 19.67º N Lat., 156.0º W. Long.; (Kraft & Abbott 1998: 56) Holotype: G. Kraft; 4 May 1996; From the sides of a nearly vertical basalt pinnacle between 7-9 m depths, growing on encrusting coralline algae; MELU; A42498 (Kraft & Abbott 1998: 56) Notes: Two whole-mount isotypes (MELU, A42499, A42500) and one isotype slide of cross-sections (MELU, A42501).
