Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Aglaothamnion is Aglaothamnion furcellariae (J.Agardh) Feldmann-Mazoyer.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gaillona seposita (Gunnerus) Athanasiadis.

Type Information
Type locality: Lhanfaethly, Anglesey, Caernavon, Wales; (Dixon & Price 1981: 138) Lectotype: Green; undated; OXF; (Dixon & Price 1981: 138) Notes: Comments: the lectotype selected is also the lectotype of Conferva purpurascens Hudson (q.v.).

Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), disregarded, isolated, reserved.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Bushy tufts of uniseriate, dark brown-red filaments, to 200 mm high, opaque, cartilaginous, heavily corticated by rhizoidal filaments. Branched repeatedly, branches clothed with pinnate ramuli. Cells of ramuli twice as long as broad.

Habitat
Most frequently on mussels, but also on rocks, barnacles and limpets, mid-intertidal on exposed shores, common in north, less frequent on southern coasts.
