Description: Plants reach 20 cm in length and are complanate and irregularly to subdichotomously branched, some species having marginal proliferous branchlets. Internal veins (representing central axial filaments) are usually visible, and surface cortical cells generally form rosettes around larger subsurface cells. The medulla is not extensive, but in all but one totally pseudoparenchymatous species (Schneider, 1988) it consists of medullary and rhizoidal filaments. Carposporophytes are composed of several large central cells and have a few sterile filaments joining to the pericarp. Cystocarps are protuberant, lack ostioles, and are confined to proliferations, the margins, or scattered on the thallus. Min-Thein and Womerelsy (1976) consider the genus a close relative of Rhodophyllis but distinct by the several large central cells of the carposporophyte rather than a single large fusion cell.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Distribution: Although the type species is from New Zealand, most (4 species) are from southern Australia. Two species recently added by Schneider (1988) are from North Carolina and Brazil.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
