Description: Compressed, subdichotomously branched to several orders with abundant simple or pinnately branched distichous laterals. Uniaxial with four periaxial cells. Cortex of nearly isodiametric cells, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Rhizoids present. Carpogonial branch and auxiliary cell branch borne on same adventitious filament in inner cortex. Carpogonium dividing once or twice after fertilization, and one of the resultant cells fusing with the nearby, terminal auxiliary cell. Gonimoblast small, all cells maturing into carposporangia. Carpostome present. Spermatangia superficial. Tetrasporophyte heteromorphic, crustose, or life cycle direct, without tetrasporophytic phase. Tetrasporangia cruciate.
