Nomenclatural note
Note in the California Academy of Science Diatoms datbase: "Type by monotypy. Grunow in Van Heurck 1881 (ref. 001035), pl. 43, fig. 7-10, reads: "Thalassiothrix?? nitschioides. In Van Heurck 1896 (p. 319, ref. 000897), the genus Thalassionema Grunow is introduced with illustration of Thalassionema nitzschoides and the comments: "in my Atlas, pl. 43, fig. 7-10, Grunow has proposed to raise Synedra nitzschoides to the rank of a new genus. I have preferred to preserve this form (as I have done in the text of the Synopsis) among the Synedra with which I arranged it in the first instance". According to ICBN art. 34.1 (b) Thalassionema was not validly published by Grunow in Van Heurck 1881 because "it is merely proposed in anticipation of the future acceptance of the group concerned" and according to Art. 34.1 (a) it is definitely not validly published in Van Heurck 1896 because "it is not accepted by the author". The name Thalassionema was validly published as the epithet in the name of a subgenus of Synedra by Peragallo & Peragallo (1901) (ref. 001056). In this publication although the species nitzschioides is given under "Thalassionema" (see pl. 81, fig. 17-18), Thalassionema is clearly introduced as a subgenus, p. 308, and the combination Thalassionema nitzschioides is not validly published. According to ING (1996) (information not verified by us), M. Peragallo in 1921 (ref. 00737), p. 69, elevates the subgenus to genus level. Meanwhile, however, Mereschkowsky 1902, p. 78 (ref. 001381) accepted Grunow's provisional genus. Genus also accepted by Mereschkowsky 1902, p. 429 (ref. 006512). Thus the correct authorship of Thalassionema is Grunow ex Mereschkowsky. This genus has been cited incorrectly as "Thalassionema Grunow in Van Heurck 1881, pl. 43, fig. 7-10 "(ref. 001035, Synopsis Diat. Belgique) (see SVL), "Thalassionema Grunow ex Hustedt in Rabenhorst. Krypt.-Flora Deutschl. 7(2):244, 1932" (ref. 000506) (see Round, Crawford & Mann 1990, p. 704, and Farr et al. 1979, p. 1744), or "Thalassionema (H. Peragallo & M. Peragallo) M. Peragallo, 2me Expédition Antarctique Française (1908-1910) Comm. J. Charcot, Bot. Diat. 69. 1921" (ref. 000737) (see ING 1996). Silva & Hasle 1997, in Taxon, 46(2):331-332, proposed to conserve the name Synedra nitzschoides with a conserved type to preserve the current application of the generic name Thalassionema. The conservation was recommended by the permanent committee on Algae (P. Compère, pers. com., 1998). " - (18 August 2010) - M.D. Guiry
