Description: The erect thallus of this cosmopolitan genus consists of uniseriate, branched filaments. Growth is diffuse intercalary. The chloroplasts are parietal, disc-shaped, numerous in each cell and each chloroplast has one pyrenoid. True phaeophycean hairs unknown. The branching pattern within the genus varies. It may be secund, but also species with scattered or opposite branches occur. Also the position of the often sessile plurilocular sporangia varies. In some species they are formed by transformation of short laterals coming from the adaxial side of the supporting lateral giving this a serrate appearance, but they also occur on the main axis. Unilocular sporangia seldom occur and they have the same position on the filaments as the plurilocular sporangia. The life history of H. ovata (Kjellm.) P. C. Silva is of the direct type (Kornmann 1954, as Giffordia fuscata, Pedersen 1979, as G. ovata). The unilocular sporangia observed in Kornmann's studies are probably apomeiotic.
