Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Description: Foliose, linear-lanceolate to orbiculate, with distinct stipe and discoid holdfast. Annual. Medulla of multinucleate, secondarily pit-connected, stellate cells with long arms, mixed with rhizoidal filaments. Inner cortical cells oblong to stellate. Outer cortical cells uninucleate, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Pit plugs lacking cap layers. Dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a long, distally recurved, proximally branched, adventitious filament. Connecting filaments from fertilized carpogonial branch contacting a succession of intercalary, distal auxiliary cells on separate, proximally branched, adventitious filaments. Cells of proximal branches sometimes forming secondary pit connections with vegetative cells. Gonimoblast arising from remnant of connecting filament attached to auxiliary cell. First-formed cells of gonimoblast incorporated into a fusion cell in most but not all species. Carpospores shed by erosion of thallus. Spermatangia superficial. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia cruciate, attached laterally to intermediate cortical cells. Fertile in fall.

Comments: Neodilsea yendoana has been used in northern Japan in making an adhesive (Tokida, 1954). Restricted to the cool temperate North Pacific: northern Japan; Kurile Islands; Alaska; British Columbia; northern Washington. There is controversy over whether the Arctic Dilsea integra should be included in this genus (see Lindstrom, 1988).
