Holotype species: Neoptilota californica (Ruprecht ex Harvey) Kylin

Original publication and holotype designation: Kylin, H. (1956). Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen. pp. i-xv, 1-673, 458 figs. Lund: C.W.K. Gleerups.

Description: Thallus as in Ptilota but with 1 of each pair of branchlets determinate and without reproductive structures. Branchlets with smooth, scalloped or serrate margins. Cystocarps 1-several on indeterminate branches. Spermatangia in sori, adaxial on branchlets. Tetrasporangia in clusters on short, indeterminate branchlets, tetrahedrally divided.
