Nomenclatural notes
Conserved over Microspora Hassall, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. 11: 363. 1843 (nom. rej.). - (15 Feb 2017) - M.D. Guiry

Description: "Microspora, gen. nov. (voy. pl. XVII, fig. 4-7). [I think it necessary to form this genus for some freshwater Conferves, with simple filaments, in which the emission of the zoospores is effected by means of a particular dislocation of the tube. The cells seem to be dislocated, so to speak, and the tube separates into as many fragments as there are articles. The type of this genus is Conferva floccosa, Ag. (Microspora floccosa, Nob.), ][an] alga remarkable by the square disposition that affects the endochrome. A neighboring species, but much smaller, will be for me the Microspora tenuis. Finally, I will give the name of Microspora monilifera (to Monilina floccosa, Bory?) To a third species, in which the chromule is arranged in small spherical masses, which gives the filaments the appearance of rosaries. The Conferva bombycina, Ag., must probably enter into this genre. The zoospores of these various species are generally very small and provided with two flagella. Nevertheless, I sometimes found in the Microspora floccosa some zoospores larger than the others, and whose rostrum bore three or four flagella. This exception is encountered in other chlorosporan Algae, as we shall see in the Ulves a remarkable example.]

Common names

(as Microspora)
Swedish: Hantelalger (Tolstoy & Österlund 2003).

Numbers of names and species: There are 33 species names in the database at present, as well as 8 infraspecific names. Of the species names, 26 have been flagged as accepted taxonomically on the basis of the listed literature under the species name. In some instances, opinions on taxonomic validity differ from author to author and users are encouraged to form their own opinion. AlgaeBase is a work in progress and should not be regarded as a definitive source only as a guide to the literature..

Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification. Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
