Description: Plants form lobate cushions on Rhodomela confervoides (Hudson) Silva. Gametophytes are dioecious, the spermatangia forming in rows following alternate oblique divisions of the surface cortical mother-cells. Supporting cells bear single outwardly directed 4-celled carpogonial branches plus an additional two sterile branches 1 and 2 cells in length. Zygote nuclei formed in the carpogonia are transferred to the supporting cell by a short non-septate tube, the auxiliary cell then dividing into a basal foot cell and a distal central cell on which two gonimoblast initials arise toward the thallus surface. Each gonimoblast initial gives rise to horizontal and outwardly directed filaments bearing branched chains of gonimoblast cells with terminal carposporangia growing into spaces formed by the extensive elongation of columnar vegetative cells (Goff and Coleman 1975). A small fusion cell forms composed of the foot cell of the auxiliary cell and the sterile cells born on the supporting (= auxiliary) cell. A single cystocarp occupies most of each fertile cushion, the carposporangia being released through narrow ostioles in the pustule surface (Goff and Coleman 1975). Many aspects of the biology of Harveyella have been recently documented, including its cytology (Goff and Cole 1973), carposporophyte development (Goff and Cole 1975), life history and factors associated with host-infection (Goff and Cole 1976a, 1976b; Goff 1976), transfer of nutrients from host to parasite (Goff 1979a), and ultrastructure of host penetrating cells (1979b).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
