Description: The terete parenchymatous thallus is unbranched or sparsely branched. The unique feature of this genus is the formation of sporangial filaments from the surface of the macrothallus. Initially they develop in sori, later they cover the entire surface. More than one sporangial filament may develop from a cortical cell or the cortical cell cuts off a supporting cell from which several few-celled filaments develop into a crown-like structure. Oblique cross-walls may be found in these filaments which also may be branched. The cell content in the filaments is later transformed into swarmers without further subdivision. The swarmers are liberated through a terminal aperture. The life history is of the direct type (Pedersen 1976); microthallus is sterile.

Comments: Coelocladia arctica is only known in nature from very scattered localities, Vaigattet, West Greenland (type locality), Southwest Greenland (as Kjellmania subcontinua Rosenvinge 1898), East Greenland (Lund 1959) - as Litosiphon subcontinuus (Rosenv.) Lund, and the East Siberian Sea (Zinova 1957). It also occurred by chance in a crude culture of Dictyosiphon foeniculaccus from Godthåbsfjorden, West Greenland.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
