Macrothamnion Wollaston, 1968
Holotype species: Macrothamnion pellucidum (Harvey) Wollaston
Original publication and holotype designation: Wollaston, E.M. (1968). Morphology and taxonomy of southern Australian genera of Crouanieae Schmitz (Ceramiaceae, Rhodophyta). Australian Journal of Botany 16: 217-417, 42 figs, 10 pls, 1 table.
Description: Thallus to 30 cm, irregularly branched, rhizoidally corticated below, large plants felt-like at base. Axes with whorls of 3(2) simple or secundly-branched acute-tipped determinate branchlets on each cell, often with thorn-like processes on young cells. Gland cells on short branches near base of determinate branchlets. Procarps on basal (supporting) cells of determinate branchlets near branch apices. Carpogonial branch 4-celled, auxiliary cell, cut off from supporting cell, leading to development of carposporophyte with rounded groups of carposporangia and fusion between lower cells. Spermatangial clusters and tetrahedrally to cruciately divided tetrasporangia on gland cell bearing branches.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.
Comments: Common on coasts of southern Australia. Easily recognized by regular whorls of determinate branchlets and gland-cells on special, short, branched branches on lower cells of branchlets.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
