Description: Sporophytes fan-shaped blades 1-4 cm tall at maturity, growing by a margin of apical cells, attached by downgrowing rhizoids, increasing in breadth by longitudinal division of apical cells. Blades monostromatic or becoming distromatic by longitudinal division of subapical cells, in transverse section appearing as laterally adherent cylindrical filaments. Cells containing numerous small, discoid chloroplasts without pyrenoids. Reproduction by unilocular sporangia borne sessile or pedicellate on the dorsal surface of the blades, in S. abyssicola among short simple filaments with apical growth arising perpendicular to the blade surface; or (in S. australe) unilocs borne on short-branched filaments arising from the dorsal surface of the blades. Spores from unilocs germinating in situ and developing without vegetative growth into 4-celled gametophytes, all 4 cells released as biflagellate gametes (S. abyssicola); or spores released from sporangia but scarcely motile and germinating on or near the sporangial walls, developing without vegetative growth into 2-celled gametophytes, both cells released as gametes (S. floridana); or spores released and developing into prostrate, filamentous, free-living gametophytes bearing small, round, few-chambered plurilocular gametangia [S. phinneyi, S. australe (?)].

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
