Acanthopeltis Okamura, 1892

Holotype species: Acanthopeltis japonica Okamura

Currently accepted name for the type species: Gelidium yoshidae G.H.Boo & R.Terada

Original publication and holotype designation: Yatabe, R. (1892). Iconographia florae japonicae; or, descriptions with figures of plants indigenous to Japan. pp. [i-111], [67]-165, pls 21-40. Tokyo: Z.P. Maruya & Co.

Description: Thallus subcylindrical, sympodially branched with erect axes attached to the substratum by several elongated haptera. Erect axes up to 15 cm high, 4 mm diam., branched in an alternate or somewhat dichotomous manner. All the segments, except the basal portions, completely invested with numerous spirally arranged disk-shaped, suborbicular, leaflike structures. After the formation of the leaflet terminally on a branch, a new lateral branch is initiated as a protuberance at the base of the leaflet. This new branch gradually enlarges and elongates forming a short cylindrical axis which terminally soon becomes broad and leaflike. A new branch is then initiated on the upper surface, at the base of the leaflet. Protuberances may be formed on the upper surface of the same leaflet, each developing into an axis, thus forming a dichotomy. The margins and surface of the leaflets may have many bristle-like projections. Tetraspores formed in dilated processes near the margin of ramuli. Cystocarps roundish-oval, produced in the marginal setae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
