Description: Thalli prostrate, attached by rhizoids, and erect polysiphonous branches, up to 1 cm tall; 4 pericentral cells, uncorticated. Pigmented monosiphonous branchlets, branched or unbranched, with or without polysiphonous proximal segments, attached in alternate radial series on upright axes. Sporling (Aponte & Ballantine 1987) attached by rhizoids, opposite pole forms a branching uniseriate filament from which polysiphonous branches emerge which in turn form both prostrate and erect polysiphonous branches. Procarps on distal end of short polysiphonous laterals; sterile cells apparently not present in procarp but 2 carpogonial branches sometimes present on same supporting cell (Aponte & Ballantine 1987); cystocarps ovoid. Male capitula cylindrical, several may be on same trichoblast, terminating different branches; short filament of sterile cells terminates fertile branchlet. Tetrasporangial stichidia conical, terminating short polysiphonous branchlets; 4 sporangia per segment; proximal segments of stichidium may each bear a trichoblast.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
