Description: Heterotrichous thallus organization; the erect filaments are branched with lateral and terminal true phaeophycean hairs. Furthermore, the genus is characterized by the mode of formation of plurilocular sporangia. They are formed by transformation of short whorled laterals which develop in the apical part of longer laterals. The erect filaments may show sympodial branching (see Polytretus for further details). Growth is diffuse intercalary and the cells contain several disc-shaped chloroplasts. The life history of Botrytella micromora (as Sorocarpus micromorus) has been studied by Pedersen (1977), Kornmann and Sahling (1984). Abe (1935) reported on slightly anisogamous sexual reproduction; sexual reproduction has not been observed by subsequent workers.

Comments: Nomenclatural note: The nomenclatural type is Ectocarpus siliculosus ß uvaeformis Lyngbye (1819). This plant was given specific rank by Bory (1822) and later also by Pringsheim (1862) - as Sorocarpus uvaeformis (Lyngbye) Pringsheim - based on the same nomenclatural type, but Pringsheim was obviously unaware of Botrytella micromora Bory. Silva (1950) proposed to conserve Sorocarpus Pringsheim against Botrytella Bory. The nomenclature committee for algae had this proposal for consideration during the Paris congress in 1954, but Sorocarpus is not on the list of nomina generica conservanda proposita to be ratified by the general committee (Anonymous 1954). Resurrection of Botrytella is therefore justified (Kornmann and Sahling 1988).
