Holotype species: Pilinella californica Hollenberg

Description: Small epiphytes consisting of prostrate filamentous system with upright branches, forming velvet-like cover on host. Most branches terminate in special small cells each with a hair. Vegetative cells with single parietal chloroplast. Reproduction by ellipsoid to obovoid sporangia terminal on short lateral branches on basal part of erect filaments; sporangia in clusters. Epiphytic on large brown algae, the Pacific coast of North America.
