Pleurostichidium Heydrich, 1893

Holotype species: Pleurostichidium falkenbergii Heydrich

Original publication and holotype designation: Heydrich, F. (1893). Pleurostichidium, ein neues Genus der Rhodomeleen. Ber. Deut. Bot. Ges. 11: 344-348.

Description: Thalli obligate epiphytes, ~1 cm tall, upright branches in clusters from a pulvinate tissue protruding from host, Xiphophora. Branches laterally flattened, dorsiventral, polyseiphonous with 10-14 pericentral cells, corticated; with few endogenously derived branches, few indeterminate, in a single row on concave side. No vegetatively formed trichoblasts. Reproductive structures on determinate ventral branchlets. Male capitula and procarps terminating dorsal fertile trichoblasts; procarps on 2nd segment of polysiphonous stalks that eventually bear spheroid cystocarps. Male capitula ovoid, on monosiphonous stalks. Tetrasporangia in flattened stichidia-like branches replacing determinate branchlets on ventral side; in rows parallel to flat side of branchlet, covered by cortication except over sporangia which have 2 cover cells each; up to 19 sporangia per segment (Falkenberg 1901).

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Obligate epiphyte on Xiphophora chondrophyllum, New Zealand. An unusual form of Rhodomelaceae assigned to its own group by Kylin (1956), there are similarities in structure and reproduction with the Amansieae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
