Original publication and holotype designation: Perestenko, L.P. (1975). Krasnye vodorosli dal'nevostochnykh morej SSSR. Plastinchatye kriptonemievye vodorosli (por. Cryptonemiales, Rhodophyta). Bot. Zhurn. 60: 1676-1689.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2019). Fourth addendum to the synoptic review of red algal genera. Botanica Marina 62(4): 355-367 [1-13].
Saunders et al. (2017) moved Beringia wynnei Clarkston & G.W.Saunders to Erythrophyllum but sequence of the generitype Beringia castanea Perestenko were not available to include the genus as a synonynym of Erythrophyllum, a move they considered likely (see Schneider & Wynne, 2019). - (27 May 2019) - M.D. Guiry
Description: Reniform to orbiculate, flat, cleft into sectors. Base cuneate to subcordate. Stipe short, thin. Holdfast discoid. Medulla filamentous, cells somewhat fusiform to elongate, occasionally suborbiculate. Cortex thin, of isodiametric to elliptical cells, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Single 3-celled carpogonial branch borne on supporting cell with three subsidiary cells. Auxiliary cell, post-fertilization development and spermatangia undescribed. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia cruciate, scattered in cortex.
