Hyella Bornet & Flahault, 1888

Holotype species: Hyella caespitosa Bornet & Flahault

Original publication and holotype designation: Bornet, É. & Flahault, C. (1888). Note sur deux nouveaux genres d'algues perforantes. Journal de Botanique, Morot 2: 161-165.

Precise date of publication: 16 May 1888

Description: Pseudofilamentous; thallus composed of filament-like, irregular rows of cells creeping on substrate (usually carbonate rich) or/and boring into it. Initial (surface) stages are gathered cell groups enveloped by own, distinct, colorless, firm sheaths (chroococcalean stages). Pseudofilaments grow into the stony substrate from the "basal" nematoparenchymatous colony, uniseriate or (rarely) polyseriate, laterally pseudobranched (divaricated) with different frequency, enveloped by thin or thickened, firm or mucilaginous, sometimes layered sheaths, straight or slightly curved at the ends with distinctly elongated terminal and subterminal cells. Cells divide irregularly in different planes, in boring pseudofilaments mainly crosswise. Enlarged cells divide sometimes into nanocytes, usually in the surface parts of thallus. Reproduction by nanocytes and by solitary cells, surrounded by gelatinous envelopes; they divide irregularly and the pseudofilaments differentiate from them. All species grow in submersed biotopes, on limestone substrates, either in marine (stony and rocky sea littoral, shells, old coral reefs), or in freshwater biotopes (usually in unpolluted creeks). Marine species probably with wide distribution in all seas of the tropical and temperate zones. In spite of it, most species are little known and need further studies. Distribution of freshwater species little known.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
