Description: Spherical or ovate, colorless cells with ray-like pseudopodia supported by microtubules in triads, and emanating from the anterior and latero-posterior part of the body. Posterior pseudopodial stalk usually trailing behind the swimming cell, but occasionally adhering to the substrate by its distal end. Single, apical flagellum has a wing supported by a paraxial rod, and bears two rows of tubular (tripartite) hairs. Minute flagellar scales present. Some cells show only apical ray-like pseudopodia (in two circles surrounding the flagellar bases). Disturbed cells retract their pseudopodia making identification almost impossible in this state. Nutrition phagotrophic; food particles are trapped on the pseudopodia from the water current set up by the flagellum. Asexual reproduction by approximately equal longitudinal division; sexual reproduction not known The described species are regarded as synonymous. Common on marine intertidal sediments and free-swimming; cosmopolitan.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
