Boekelovia Nicolai & Baas-Beck, 1935

Holotype species: Boekelovia hooglandii M.F.E.Nicolai & L.G.M.Baas-Becking

Original publication and holotype designation: Nicolai, M.F.E. & Baas-Becking, L.G.M. (1935). Einige Notizen über Salzflagellaten. Archiv für Protistenkunde 85: 319-328.

Description: Cells solitary, free-swimming, distinctly flattened and slightly curved when seen from the side, and triangular to cordiform in face view. Two unequal flagella inserted ventrally at some distance from the anterior end. Cell body apparently naked. Protoplast with 1-2 chloroplasts (without girdle lamellae), a single stigma and two spindle-shaped bodies of storage material lying parallel to the sides of the cell. Contractile vacuole not observed. This poorly known genus resembles Sphaleromantis (Chrysophyceae), but it has two flagella, both of which appear to be smooth (Toon and Meyer 1987). Probably it belongs to the Prymnesiophyceae (Pavlovales?) rather than to the Chrysophyceae (Ochromonadales), as suggested by Bourrelly (1981). Reproduction and stomatocysts unknown. Found in brackish waters in the Netherlands, Belgium and USA, sometimes forming dense layers on the water surface.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
