Type designated in: Geitler, L. (1932). Cyanophyceae. In: Kryptogamen-Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Ed. 2. (Rabenhorst, L. Eds) Vol. 14, pp. 673-1196, i-[vi]. Leipzig: Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft.

Description: Filamentous; filaments joined in gelatinous mats and later more or less erect fascicles, usually long, commonly branched (only sheaths), with limited, more or less cylindrical, firm, homogeneous, widened, colorless or slightly yellowish sheath, which is in small distances transversely constricted, but not longitudinally lamellated. Sheaths contain several to many number of trichomes, sometimes freely, later densely aggregated parallel in fascicles. Trichomes cylindrical with straight ends, usually unconstricted at cross walls. Cells more or less isodiametric or slightly longer or shorter than wide, without calyptra. Cell division crosswise, perpendicular to the long axis of trichomes. Reproduction by motile hormogonia, separating from trichomes by help of necridic cells (?). Mainly periphytic species, growing on macroalgae and stones on marine coasts (4 species), other species known from periphyton on plants in swamps or from thermal and mineral springs.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
