Description: Colonies grape-shaped, free-swimming, consisting of 2-16 cells rather loosely arranged and not embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Cells obovate to ellipsoid or pyriform, with their long axes parallel or slightly oblique to the long axis of the colony, the posterior ends inclined outwards to some degree and the anterior ends and the flagella all directed the same way. Individual cells may become detached from the colony, they are somewhat metabolic, especially when resting on the substratum. Each cell has two unequal flagella, two chloroplasts, one stigma and two contractile vacuoles. Chloroplasts sometimes absent. Reproduction by longitudinal division of the cells. Stomatocysts and sexual reproduction unknown. One species from brackish water in Belgium, the other from freshwater in Sweden.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
