Pectodictyon Taft, 1945

Holotype species: Pectodictyon cubicum Taft

Original publication and holotype designation: Taft, C.E. (1945). Pectodictyon, a new genus in the family Scenedesmaceae. Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 64: 25-28.

Description: Thalli conical or cubical colonies, 12-95 &m in diameter, mostly with 4-8 cells embedded in structured mucilage envelope with spaces separating single cells or recently formed autospores; subdivisions of colony connected by mucilage strands. Cells spherical to tetrahedral, 3.5-12 &m in maximum dimension, with smooth cell walls. Cells ?uninucleate, chloroplast single and parietal; pyrenoid single. Asexual reproduction by autospores; (2-) 4-8 spores per sporangium, released by dissolution of parental cell walls. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Pectodictyon planktonic in freshwater; reported from Europe, North America, Japan. Species distinguished based on cell and colony morphology. Genus placed in subfamily Dictyochlorelloideae.
