Starria N.J.Lang, 1977
Holotype species: Starria zimbabweënsis N.J.Lang
Publication details: N.J.Lang, 1977: 289
Original publication and holotype designation: Lang, N.J. (1977). Starria zimbabweënsis (Cyanophyceae) gen. nov. et sp. nov.: a filament triradiate in transverse section. Journal of Phycology 13: 288-296, 26 figs.
Description: Filamentous; filaments unbranched, uniseriate, isopolar, solitary, short or variable in length, straight to helically twisted, more or less equally wide along the whole length, about 15 _m wide and slightly torulose, without sheaths or with delicate sheaths 3 _m thick following the contours of the cells; trichomes flattened and triradiate in transverse section, slightly constricted at the crosswalls, nonmotile. Cells shorter than broad, in cross section with broad arm-like projections 120 degrees apart, separated by U-shaped depressions, arms broaden somewhat toward their extremities which may be obtuse to truncate at outer edge; pigmentation is concentrated in arms. Thylakoids localized along the cell walls and more agglomerated and coiled within the protrusions. Cell content blue-green, without prominent granules and inclusions. Heterocytes and akinetes are missing. Cell division crosswise, reproduction by fragmentation, sometimes in short pieces to solitary cells. The type species was isolated from the soil sample collected from cavities in granitic rocks near the ancient city Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
