Endodinium Hovasse, 1922

Holotype species: Endodinium chattonii Hovasse

Original publication and holotype designation: Hovasse, R. (1922). Endodinium chattoni (nov. gen. et sp.). Son cycle de multiplication endogène. Variation du nombre de ses chromosomes. Compte Rendu Hebdomadaire des Séances de l’Académie des Sciences. Paris. 87: 845-846.

Description: Endocytic symbiotic dinophyte of Velella velella (Cnidaria) and perhaps of Collozoum inerme (Radiolaria). As symbionts unicells are globular, 12-14µm in diam. and surrounded by a 5-layered amphiesma consisting of a plasmalemma and 4 outer layers. Chloroplasts single and peripheral; chloroplast lamellae formed from pairs of closely apposed thylakoids, not the typical 3 thylakoids per band as in most dinophytes. Pyrenoid and pyrenoid lamellae in non-reduced form. After Taylor (1971), the motile stage resembles Amphidinium Claparède and Lachmann; therefore Endodinium is regarded by some as later synonym of Amphidinium, but Hollande and Carré (1974) suppose that the motile stage may resemble Gymnodinium Stein. Identity of the type species of Endodinium with that of Zooxanthella Brandt, a genus proposed for rejection, is not clear. If so, Endodinium would be a later synonym of Zooxanthella.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
