Sinophysis D.Nie & C.-C.Wang, 1944

Holotype species: Sinophysis microcephala D.Nie & C.-C.Wang

Original publication and holotype designation: Nie, D. & Wang, C.-C. (1944). Dinoflagellata of the Hainan Region. VIII. On Sinophysis microcephalus, a new genus and species of Dinophysidae. Sinensia 15: 145-151.

Description: Medium-sized (45 - 35 µm) laterally compressed flagellate, circular-to-subcircular in lateral view, with a very small epicone, separated by a well-developed cingulum from the large hypocone with a well-developed sulcus which does not reach the antapex. The cellulosic plates are covered by many areolae. The type species has unique surface ornamentations of the epithecal plates. The left one has 2 pairs of channeled and parallel projections, possesses a large apical pore, the position of the pore differs from that of all other species in this order. Nucleus large, located posteriorly in the hypocone. No chloroplasts, nutrition apparently phagotrophic. Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Marine benthic, coasts of tropical and temperate regions. Emend. Chomérat (2016: 460).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
