Holotype species: Syltodinium listii G.Drebes

Original publication and holotype designation: Drebes, G. (1988). Syltodinium listii gen. et sp. nov., a marine ectoparasitic dinoflagellate on eggs of copepods and rotifers. Helgoländer Meeresuntersuchungen 42(3-4): 583-591.

Description: Ectoparasitic on invertebrate eggs, Gymnodinium (Stein)-like dinospores infect the host by a peduncle and begin myzocytotic food uptake resulting in gradual increase of the cell volume; shape is only slightly changed, the cingulum and sulcus flattened. After termination of food uptake, the trophont detaches from the host, swimming some before forming a large hyaline mucus cyst in which 1-5 binary fissions take place. Although flagella are not obvious during the division stages, disturbed cells immediately are flagellated and can swim. It remains latently motile during the whole vegetative life cycle. Cells without chloroplasts. Ectoparasitic marine dinophytes feeding on eggs of Copepoda and Rotifera, only from the southern North Sea.
