Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Prevalent form is skeleton-bearing; naked and amoeboid forms also present. The number of spines per cell varying from four to seven, but predominantly four. Basket-like, internal skeleton, more or less rhomboid shaped, producing an apical bridge with several connecting struts of similar thickness to basal ring. Pikes occurring on the abapical surface of the basal ring. Both skeleton-bearing and naked cells showing one long flagellum under LM. Naked form with no mucocysts. Pyrenoid bulging laterally in the chloroplast with tubular intrusion. Containing on average 15 Golgi bodies in the skeleton-bearing form. Life cycle consisting of a multinucleate stage. With chlorophylls a and c (no data on chls. c1, c2, c3). Major carotenoids: fucoxanthin and diadinoxanthin; no data on the two acyl-oxyfucoxanthin derivatives. Lutein present and zeaxanthin absent. Sequence of SSU rDNA separates this species from the rest of Dictyochales.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
