Description: Unicellular - colonial; colonies microscopic, slightly irregular mucilaginous spheres, on the surface of which are a few irregularly distributed elongated cells; gelatinous spheres usually composed of irregular aggregations. Mucilage homogeneous, not structured, colorless, limited with more or less firm margins. Cells oval or rodlike, more or less distant from one another, without aerotopes, pale blue-green or greyish. Division of cells perpendicular to their longer axis; daughter cells separate soon one from another. Reproduction by the dissociation of colonies in mucilaginous clusters with several or solitary cells. Known from plankton, tychoplankton and epipelon of mesotrophic lakes of Scandinavia (Sweden, Finland), northwest Russia (Karelia, vicinity of St. Petersburg) and central Canada.
