Pannus Hickel, 1991

Holotype species: Pannus spumosus B.Hickel

Original publication and holotype designation: Hickel, B. (1991). Two new chroococcal cyanophytes from a brackish environment (Schlei-Fjord), Germany. Algological Studies/Archiv für Hydrobiologie, Supplement Volumes 64: 97-104.

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies free-floating or mixed with other algae and among aquatic plants, microscopic, flattened, irregular in outline, clathrate and waved, composed of subcolonies, with cells situated irregularly in one plane, in a layer of 1-3; young colonies more or less spherical, old colonies irregular, many-celled. Colonial mucilage fine, homogeneous, colorless, diffluent. Cells spherical or slightly elongated (before division), after division hemispherical, pale blue-green, with or without gas vesicles, sometimes surrounded with special fine, diffluent mucilaginous envelopes. Cell division in two directions perpendicular to the surface of the colony. Reproduction by the dissociation of colonies. Free-floating (planktonic) in lakes, small reservoirs, sometimes in slightly saline water. One species originally attached to filamentous algae or submersed plants.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
