Description: Small flagellate with a pair of long flagella. Flagella and cell body covered with unmineralized spiderweb-like scales. Internal structure of the cell unknown, all species are known only from electron microscopical whole mounts. They differ in the structure of the scaly covering.

Comments: Dolicomastix was described from cold water (-1 - 12°C) in Arctic Canada, Alaska and South Africa (Manton 1977), but D. lepidota and D. nummulifera have subsequently been found also in Europe, at temperatures up to 18°C.
