Coelastropsis B.Fott et T.Kalina, 1979

Holotype species: Coelastropsis costata (Korshikov) Fott & Kalina

Description: More or less spherical coenobia, 40 (-58) &m in diameter, with (2-) 4-8-16 cells forming dense, spherical mass or more or less ovoid cluster of cells not embedded in mucilaginous matrix. Cells spherical to ellipsoid, 9-21 &m diameter or long. Cell walls thick, with numerous longitudinal ribs and shorter perpendicular wrinkles. Cells uninucleate chloroplast single and band shaped with prominent pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores (2-) 4-8-16 spores per sporangium, organized into new coenobium. Thick-walled resting cells with haematochrome also recorded. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Coelastropsis planktonic in freshwater lakes and bogs probably cosmopolitan, genus widely distributed in northern Europe and Cuba with possible record from New Zealand. In culture ribs may be reduced and appear wart- or tooth-like, in which case cells may be confused with Coelastrum verrucosum.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
