Description: Colorless, rigid, ovoid, flattened (usually very flat) cells, concavo-convex in cross-section or with keels; mostly small, up to 20 _ 10 _m, a few up to 35-40 _m long; canal opening subapical, with 2 emergent flagella, unequal, heterodynamic, the longer directed anteriorly during swimming, the shorter trailing; phagotrophic but no ingestion organelle visible in the light microscope. Genus reviewed by Skuja (1939). Freshwater, characteristically in bog-pools and sediments; Europe, Asia and the Americas.
