Pseudophalacroma Jørgensen, 1923

Holotype species: Pseudophalacroma nasutum (F.Stein) E.Jørgensen

Original publication and holotype designation: Jørgensen, E. (1923). Mediterranean Dinophysiaceae - Report on the Danish Oceanographical Expeditions 1908-10 to the Mediterranean and adjacent Seas. II Biology. Vol. 2. pp. 1-48. Copenhagen: Carlsbergfondet.

Description: Medium-sized (50 µ;m) ovoid flagellate, slightly laterally compressed. Circular cingulum divides the small epicone, which has only 1/10 of total body length, from the much larger hypocone. Epicone and hypocone each are enclosed in 2 very large thecal plates in addition to others. Plate formula not known. Differs from Dinophysis Stein by an epithecal structure giving the impression that the sulcus is extending onto the epitheca. Note that according to Abé (1967c), the description of Pseudophalacroma nasutum of Tai and Skogsberg does not deal with that species but another species of the genus Metaphalacroma. Chloroplasts not known. Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Needs reinvestigation. Marine planktonic, mediterranean and arctic to subtropical regions; distribution not very well known as often confused with Metaphalacroma Tai and Skogsberg, Dinophysis rotundata, and other similar species.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
