Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.
Description: Cells cylindrical, forming chains by means of linking spines. Valve face circular, convex, bordered by a marginal ridge with linking spines. Linking spines mostly partially hollow with bullulae. Areolae radiating from valve centre to valve margin, loculate with external vela and internal foramina. Rimoportulae positioned just above valve margin in a single ring, internal openings small, oval, lying within the marginal ring of foramina; external openings often covered by auricular flaps.

Nomenclatural note
Skeletonemopsis P. A. Sims in Regnum Veg. 157: 50. 2015 Type: Skeletonema barbadense Grev. was inadvertently validated in Appendix III of the 2015 Code (Kanchi Gandhi pers. comm.). While "Skeletonematopsis" is orthographically correct, "Skeletonemopsis" was used when the name was validated and must be used in the absence of conservation, - (16 November 2024) - M.D. Guiry
