Trochisciopsis Vinatzer, 1975

Holotype species: Trochisciopsis tetraspora Vinatzer

Original publication and holotype designation: Vinatzer, G. (1975). Neue Bodenalgen aus den Dolomiten. Plant Systematics and Evolution 123: 213-235.

Description: Unicellular, solitary thalli 20-60 &m diameter. Cells spherical with cell walls thick, producing conspicuous parallel ribs some of which form complete circles around the cell and more or less run from pole to pole. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal without pyrenoids but with numerous starch grains. Asexual reproduction by aplanospores or biflagellate zoospores 3-5 &m long. Sporangia initially divide into a tetrahedral tetrad, each of which then forms a separate packet of spores. After rupture of parental wall packets of spores released as a group and with tearing of membrane, individual spores released. Zoospores pointed at anterior, with stigma and inconspicuous contractile vacuoles. Cell wall ornamentation develops after loss of flagella. Trochisciopsis isolated from soil, the type species from calcareous substrata; reported only from alpine regions in northern Italy. Species distinguished based on cell size and patterns of cell wall ornamentation. Relationships unclear, placed in Palmellaceae by some authors.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
