Perone Pascher, 1932

Holotype species: Perone dimorpha Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1932). Über einige neue oder kritische Heterokonten. (Beiträge zur Kenntnis der einheimischen Algenflora. II.). Archiv für Protistenkunde 77: 305-359.

Description: Unicellular, sessile, benthic, solitary organisms. Cells 12-60 _m diameter, spherical to ellipsoidal or flattened ellipsoidal, more rarely pyriform. Cell wall thin and non ornamented. In young cells the cytoplasm occupies the entire cell with only small vacuoles. Cell uninucleate with one to three ellipsoid or discoid and parietal chloroplasts. Adult cells multinucleate with numerous ovoid or fusiform chloroplasts dispersed in the peripheral cytoplasm. The center of the cell is reticulate with voluminous vacuoles, lipid globules, oil and refringent protein crystals. Asexual reproduction by amoeboid zoospores, 7-15 _m diameter with up to approximately 200 produced per mother cell. Zoospores with or without flagella with one to three chloroplasts, a stigma and two contractile vacuoles. When present, flagella two and unequal. The larger is slightly longer than the cell ; the other is very short. Flagellated zoospores quickly loose their flagella and, as in amoeboid zoospores, creep on the substratum and attach to develop into new young, solitary, unicellular thalli. Cysts unknown. Perone epiphytic on the green leaves of Sphagnum; known from central Europe and North America.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
