Chloropedia Pascher, 1930
Holotype species: Chloropedia plana Pascher
Publication details: Pascher, 1930: 447
Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1930). Zur Kenntnis der heterokonten Algen. Archiv für Protistenkunde 69: 401-451.
Description: Organisms colonial, forming monostromatic or irregularly two layered cushions (very rarely more) to 40-60 _m, comprised of a few to many hundreds of cells, generally grouped in twos or fours. Thallus attached to substratum and surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Cells 6-13 _m diameter, spherical, globular to bluntly polyhedral with a smooth cell wall, thin to thick and sometimes mucilaginous. Chloroplasts parietal and cup shaped, typically two per cell (three in large cells). Oil globules and lipids present. Neither stigma nor contractile vacuoles present. Asexual reproduction by autospores (2 per cell) or by highly metabolic zoospores; the latter with two, very unequal flagella, two chloroplasts, a stigma. Palmelloid stages reported. Chloropedia rare and typically in periphyton in ponds; known only from central Europe and South America. Species distinguished based on cell dimensions, the number of cell per colony, the groupings of cells in two or fours, and whether or not the thallus has a parenchymatous construction.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
